Flexible Parts - Applications and improvements

Besides cables and hoses, other flexible components are also necessary to ensure functionality. Some typical examples are grommets as part of the door supply cable harness or the cable harness to the trunk lid, the bellows leading to the engine, axle boots that flexibly cover the joints of a drive shaft and flat conductors for the electronics industry.

The challenge is to design the flexible components in such a way that they do not get in contact with surrounding components even under the influence of movement, such as the opening of a door or an engine movement. In addition, through-holes and connections have to be considered in the construction process. It is therefore crucial to ensure the correct layout of the bellows, grommets and flat conductors directly in the design. These designs have a direct influence on the protective function of the bellows and grommets against external influences.

IPS provides the possibilities to create and validate these flexible components. Due to the fast and accurate simulation an interactive work becomes possible and these objects can be viewed with the cables and hoses inside IPS. This leads to a correct design and a later validated installation.

This can be used for clearance checks to surrounding parts and the tension on the bellows. In addition the bellow size is necessary to be optimized in order to guarantee the functionality of the flexible parts in the best possible way. The contact handlings enables the correct behavior of the components. In this use case the space inside the engine compartment between the bellow and the surroundings needs to be large enough to allow bellow movement, but not too large as the available space is limited.
